One aside,

There are (many) exceptions to the 'never open-limp' guideline. Often times it is the best play, maybe even at 6m. But they are the exception, and the reason they are the best play is because exceptional conditions exist. Until you understand what these exceptional conditions are and how they effect your strategy, it's probably best to stick to the guideline. Given that this forum is mostly about the fundamentals of no-limit, I'm keeping my advice targeted to that.

something that helped me at first was just listening to other people about preflop play. NL preflop play really weird and counter-intuitive at times, and you need a good feel for the game to make up your own gameplan. if you remember back learning limit, it was kind of the same deal. first just learn what to do preflop, then when you start to "get it" you can start questioning why and developing your own preflop style.

i basically never limp vs full stacks and i'd recommend doing the same. dead money is critical just like in LHE. except in NL you have fold equity on your PFR's

I can go with that. Still it's always nice to have a bit of a grasp.

The thing is, most people say things like "open for 3BB" and sometimes "open for 3BB UTG and a bit more on the button" etc. Which is what I used to do years ago when I played NL a lot.

And this week I've read the Flynn/Mehta/Miller book which advocates a completely different and IMO more convincing strategy.

So whom should I listen to?

(BTW I do not claim that this justifies limping these 3s - I am sure it does not - and the fold equity in these weak-tight games certainly indicates raising just to steal later)
