Default Put him on a hand.

Opponent here is a decent playing TAG, or so it seems. I wonder what he was holding to take this line, and whether you think he played it brilliantly or stupidly.

TAG UTG i.e. me raises UTG. I'm something like 25/19 overall but probably have been quite active at this table.

Villain threebets in the CO. UTG caps.

Flop is A93. UTG bets, villain raises, UTG calls.

Turn T. UTG checks, villain bets, UTG check-raises, villain folds.

So what was he up to there?

I see LAGs take this line with all sorts of cheese sometimes
they realise that after you cap your range is going to be like [TT-AA, AK]

that range has 24 combos of TT-KK and 15 of AA/AK, so with the pot being so big it is profitable to make a play at the pot if you will fold your big PPs

or maybe he made a big laydown with a poorly played AJ

If villain raised this flop with TT, he's attempting to knock out JJ-KK. If he's got JJ, he wants to fold out QQ-KK.

He probably took a stab at it on the cheap street hoping to fold out a better non-ace pair or value bet a worse pair. It may have been a play in the name of finding out "where he's at."

If you were villain and had TT-KK on this flop, what would you do? I suppose I'd just call to see what UTG does on the turn. I might fold TT though, since there aren't any preflop capping hands that I beat at this point. JJ would leave me hoping UTG had TT and that I might fold as well. QQ and KK I would call with.

yeah they pretty much nailed it, PPs takin a shot at ur non A capping range attempting to fold out better PPs but cant calldown profitably vs ur range or TPGK AJ AT that stupidly decided to raise the flop to "see where they were at", even tags suck at poker in some spots esp live ones who just win becuz everyone else is like 60/0 and even less competent postflop.

UTG caps here so I'm saying he has a strong A. Your opponent probably raised a small to mid pp here because that's what you do against other TAGs. He didn't want to give up on the flop so he raised to represent the A. He then bet out on the turn in desperation, but was clearly beat when you took this strong line. You played it well and he didn't.

Suppose I have QQ here. I raise and cap form UTG, he raises my flop bet on the A-high board. What should I do?

Guy.

That depends on how straight forward he plays post-flop. You shouldn't be raising anywhere though. Against a decent TAG I would call the flop and turn and then make a decision on the river I guess. This position sucks against a decent player. As always, this is where specific reads help.

Fine, let's say he's me and I have 99 in his spot. I decided for some reason to raise this flop, thinking I can fold out all of your TT-KK with further aggression. It's either that or I have a good A (probably AJs at worst) that I'm not folding. Why should you ever raise me (unless you're 3rd leveling/spewing me with KQs, in which case you get my money?) I'll give up on the river most likely because I never seem to have a good enough read to say "this guy will take a call call fold line against good players thinking they will give up on the river."
