Default When do you know when you are playing too high?

I think it is when your heart drops to your stomach when you lose a hand or get knocked out of a tourney. Maybe.

You can play over your head Psycologically, even if you have deep pockets.
I have a friend who is now a day trader who trades 10's of thousands of dollars per transaction without blinking.
A few years ago we went to the casino and he lost $20 on the craps table. For the rest of the evening he was bummed and complained about it.
