If I may quote Mike "the mouth" : "god bless Chris Moneymaker".

IMO he's right - Imagine Sammy winning their heads-up match?

I dare say none of us would be here today (and by "here" I mean this forum...)

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, no I'm here because of Raymer.

Hmmm,

I'm not sure that:

a. this forum would be a live if not for Moneymaker.
b. Raymer would be here, or Raymer the WSOP champion.

a. Raymer was a member here well before Moneymaker won the WSOP.
b. Greg's first WSOP cash was in 2001.
c. Believe it or not people did play poker before 2003, including many of us here.

I didn't say that poker did not exist before Moneymaker - obviously he won his sit at an online site, which had to cater to a need.
BUT, the sheer growth of the poker world, and the internet poker in specific can, and should, be attributed to CM.

Rounders is to Poker what Necessary Roughness is to Football.

Rounders was a big influence because it was released while online poker was growing. It became a cult hit in the same way Office Space did.

In between Rounders and CM, the table hole cam really kicked poker into high gear. Without it, poker would have continued to be popular, but wouldn't have exploded. Remember the old WSOP broadcasts with Dick Van Patten? Brutal to watch unless you turn the volume off. People whonever played poker in their life could figure out what hole cards players had better than him. You could lose years of poker training in an evening listening to him (well, the wpt too).

The poker boom was a perfect storm of Rounders, Table Cam, Online poker and CM.

I didn't think Rounders was that great. It didn't make me want to play poker. Then again, I'm not a 20-something yuppy that's looking for a role model. 20-something poker players make me vomit.
