Re: Will society ever go hysterical over a celebrity again?
Clearly none of you have been to a Justin Timberlake concert. I mean...I've never been to one either but I imagine if I did I'd be wet with desire in the front row

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Same as society won't go crazy over another movie in the way Titantic was, there are just to many modern distractions. [/ QUOTE ] eh? that was not even 10 years ago... i realize stuff changes fast but i don't see any cultural differences between then and now that would stop something like Titanic from happening again. like, i dunno, i think harry potter is pretty close for example [/ QUOTE ] depends what record, but for example weeks at #1 Potter isnt close (actually Beverly Hills Cop is ...) |

Re: Will society ever go hysterical over a celebrity again?
O.J., but only after the murders. Nowadays our hysteria is conducted from home, in front of the t.v., and our stars are accused criminals. O.J. absolutely saturated our culture and almost every media, and really burned his imprint into our collective minds. I don't know who the next mega-celebrity will be, but I doubt he will approach O.J.'s stature and impact.

I personally think we go crazy over celebrities more now than back then.
BackStreet Boys, N'Sync, Nirvana, Justin Timberlake, etc etc etc. |

Re: Will society ever go hysterical over a celebrity again?
[ QUOTE ]
According to someone I believe, girls would get so excited over the Beatles that the ones close to the stage would cum in their pants and leave wet spots on the seats. [/ QUOTE ] I don't know about cum in their pants, though I'm sure some did. But those events were famous for girls peeing in their pants, and not just in a figurative way. |

Re: Will society ever go hysterical over a celebrity again?
BackStreet Boys came pretty close in other countries. The hotel they stayed at in South America (Brazil, I think) was beseiged by fans even though they made great efforts to keep their stay private, police and riot control had to be called in and they even asked the BSB to request that all the fans go home or they would be arrested or something like that. Their tour bus was almost turned over as they left.
But the problem is simply due to the mass communication we have currently. Music doesn't make Massive breaks in style and leaps of progression because anytime something remotely different is made it's broadcast around the world, so instead of being amazed at something completely different we are introduced step by step towards the rapid progression of new sound. |

people went nuts over Michael Jordan, and they still do over Tiger Woods, (maybe not quite as much?)

i think eminem was close to NKTOB level. maybe just a step below. [/ QUOTE ] Only a very small segment of people. NKOTB wasn't even close to the Beatles in the general public consciousness. Going on 40 years after the Beatles, hundreds of millions of people still can recite lyrics from any number of their songs. It would be no surprise if the number of people who can cite the lyrics from more than one NKOTB song is unimpressive, and I wouldn't be surprised if most people couldn't even name one of their songs. |
