No, I believe his point was that a) not knowing about Canada is not the same as being ignorant about other cultures, and b) Canada is not up there on the list of culturally significant places (not that it's insignificant, just that there are tons of other places that are much more significant).

the fact that el d haven't even been in canada when he's been to all those other countries is pretty funny. While he's been to my country and the 2 neighbour(sp) countries and the 2(rly 3 i guess but) with just ocean between us and them, and would like to visit the last land neighbour. bonus point to people finding out which country!

I tend to agree. I'm Canadian, and I didn't realize how insignifcant Canada was until I moved to the US and found out that nothing that happens in Canada means much to anyone anywhere (including me - I didn't even know Harper won the election until I read it in this thread). While many Canadians have a bit of trouble accepting this (or believing it), for me it just kind of confirmed what I'd suspected all along.

Someone once said we were like the neighbors who lived in an attic above a super fun party on the main floor. That's a fairly accurate description. Every once in a while we bang on the floor to try and get the noise down, then we get ignored and the party continues.

I wonder if geography has something to do with it. The US is as big as all of Europe, in one country instead of a few dozen. You have to know something about other cultures in Europe when they are literally right next door. Not so much in the US.
