Re: Pro Players...tell us your story!!!
God coached by a friend of mine 18 months ago.
Started at 10nl. Planed to move up limits after winning 20 buy ins. Spent 3 weeks at 10nl Spent 3 weeks at 25nl Spent 3 weeks at 50nl Spent almost a god damn year going betw 100nl and back to 50nl. This is when I tried a lot of new stuff like playing up to 5-tables, raising limpers EVERY time I had position, raising almost everything in BU, etc. It was up and down with some big mofo swings. I made a very large percent of winnings at 100nl from rb+bonuses (and built a massive roll from that). Eventually UB changed the way they calculate rake (and bonuses) which meant I could no longer live off rake & bonuses ([censored] UB BASTARDS). So with a big ass mofo roll, I moved up to 200nl and decided to try play well and focus with only 2 tables and see if I can make actual money from winnings. That was 3 months ago and I've been running really well at around $100 an hour. Moral of the story - know someone who is good and can teach you for free =) |

Re: Pro Players...tell us your story!!!
Now that I don't have a day job, I sleep in much later and stay up later at night. Also, while my girlfriend is away at her real job, I can watch porn on the big downstairs TV WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A SICK DAY - awesome!
Also, you don't have to play poker all the time to be a "pro". If you want the big bucks and all that then yah you'll need to put in the time, but like, $5000/month is like what 25k hands at 200NL - so, yah, you don't have to "work" much at all if you don't want (assuming you are actually a winning player) |

Re: Pro Players...tell us your story!!!
I am faaar from going pro (currently 50NL), but think about it from time to time (read: upswings).
two things that concern me : 1) social life. when you have a real day job, you have co-workers and in general get to deal with ppl a lot (well in most jobs I guess), which is a very important thing in everyday life. when playing online for a living you don't have that to that extent, except you have some friends who do the same or share your "working" hours. as I don't have friends who are into the game as much as I am, I probably wouldn't consider going pro, because of the lack of social interaction (chatting isn't the same). 2) career. you don't really gain for your CV by playing poker. what if you don't want to do that forever? it probably doesn't look that great if you've been playing poker for some years and then want to apply for a job that is based on your university degree. furthermore, you don't really have the opportunity to rise status wise, except moving up limits. do you want to play poker for a living forever? how do you know that at the moment for the future? I'd like to hear some comments of you pros on these things. |

I would rather play poker for 2 hours a day than slave for 35 hours a week while I get my education.

I'm really close to going pro actually. -I've applied to relevant schools for fall '08 (law, dental) -I work a job in a lab that has good benefits but i don't need the money and don't enjoy it that much -I have mucho $ in the bank, and generally print it at 200 (but don't play more than 25k hands max in a month) I want to quit my job, play more poker, travel the world more and have more fun (less work). My only concern is I don't have any/enough friends that are at the same point in their lives, so all of my potential roommates are broke and no one can take months to just travel and have fun. That's the thing holding me back the most I think. Pros- do you guys just play poker non-stop? What do you think the minimum $ about per month is that you need to make? [/ QUOTE ] A good point about the travel. I would like to travel but don't want to go about it alone as that kills the experience of traveling across country or to another country. I would worry about friends leaching off of you as they can say "your making enough for all of us". Well I don't know your friends but good luck. |
