There are a number of solid humane arguments as to why we don't want workers and their families exploited for $1.50 an hour.

[/ QUOTE ]
Why do you think this would happen without a minimum wage?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because it happened in the US before there was a minimum wage and happens all over the world today wherever it's permitted?

You should note that I am note defending other idiots in this comment. Just because she voted once for a good idea doesnt make her not a socialist and worth my support.

Ignoring them [Europeans], though -- now that's biased.

And bad for the pocket book. I've been investing in Vanguard European Stock Index Fund (VEURX) for 3 years. YTD it is up 25.2%, full year it is up 31.6%. Five-year average is 14.8%. This five year average is well above the 6.8% for the Vanguard 500 index - though of course the US took a big hit from 9/11 so this is not really a fair comparison. Still, the Eurotrash Maggots and their socialist working lackeys are making me money. Go Europe.

how much of that gain is due to the falling dollar vs anything the EU has accomplished?

The future is shaped by our kids' education, the status of human health, our current social environment and all the other above-mentioned factors.

Ignoring them -- now that's biased.

[/ QUOTE ] I was referring to the factors that shape our future, actually, rather than "the Europeans", as something that cannot be ignored.

[/ QUOTE ] Every stockmarket in the western world took a hit on 9/11. They just recovered at a different pace.

The important thing is that the Euro did not weaken when the Union was expanded to 25 members, by taking onboard some truly shaky economies, such as Eastern Europe's.

[/ QUOTE ]That's not what this is about. I do not expect you, or other people with anti-liberal political convictions, to ever support someone like Nancy Pelosi.

The point is that she voted against something that got this forum up in arms a few weeks ago, something that very few congressmen had the guts to oppose (since it was tacked inside a supposedly "patriotic" bill), and she deserves respect for that. You had to be much better than "Not brain dead" to vote against the internet gambling ban; you had to be politically brave as well -- and I just don't see too many brave congressmen around.

Fact is I do respect her, although I doubt her motives other than pandering to the socialists in many cases. That being said I doubt alot of elected officials motives.

Default Re: Foresight and the Democratic Party

Hmmm, my thread was hijacked but I enjoyed the detour. It is pretty clear that those who think raising the minimum wage is a good thing won't be swayed by economic data (USA economic data which is all that is relevant) or will use misleading data to argue why it is good. Liekwise most conservatives think raising the minimum wage is more intrusion by the government into our private lives.

With that out of the way I see 2008 as being a very good year for our country, two years of gridlock shoukd keep the stock market healthy but will drive the Democrats base nuts. This should provide an impetus for another Republican President in 2008. I would vote for McCain, he has crossover support and with the proper running mate should be a shoein winner. A nice touch would be if Shrillary gets the nod from the Democrats further alienating her after a landslide loss.

So to the original intent of my OP, Pelosi becoming Speaker will be good for our country in the long run as long as we don't cave in to the Democrats mantra to "cut n run" from Iraq.
