Thanks, Prop; I've had people tell me my writing reminds them of Bukowski (hilariously enough, I've never read anything by him), and you reminded me of that, so I'll definitely add some of his stuff to the list.

I have a 2 inch by 2 inch copy of it laying next to my john. But I don't want anyone accusing me of bragging, so I'll stop there.

if you're into fiction...

The Kite Runner and The Last Dive are both awesome... and very in-law friendly.

If you like econ... Friedman's "The Lexus and olive Tree" and "The World is Flat" are good and will make you look smart.

If you hate liberal... "Dutch" and "Intellectual Morons" are great.

If you need something to help you go to sleep... go with "Collapse" or "Running with Scissors".

BTW... Sorry about the hijack... BUT

Can anyone recommend some good LITERARY CLASSICS...

"The Things They Carried" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" are two if my all time favorite books, so we might have some similar tastes in literature. I kind of hate Kerouac, for what it's worth.

Here are a few of my favorite writers (if they have an * after their name you might not want to ask the gf's family to buy them for you)

Denis Johnson* (Jesus' Son ... Best. Book. Ever.)
Irvine Welsh**
Robertson Davies
Italo Calvino (If on a Winter's Night a Traveller, The Baron in the Trees)
Salman Rushdie (Midnight's Children)
Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn, Amnesia Moon)
T.C. Boyle (the earlier the better)
George Saunders (short stories)
Flann O'Brien (At Swim Two Birds)
Neal Stephenson
Tobias Wolff

If you're interested Bukowski, "The Most Beautiful Woman in Town" is my favorite, though they are short stories.
