Default OOT, help me pick out some books

Every year I just issue a list of books for people to buy me for Christmas. Give me some good books to put on the list. I'm open to anything, but just for the record, some of my favorite authors are Kerouak, Hunter Thompson, and Tim O'Brien (in case someone out there has the same taste). I also like poker and chess books (they don't have to be strategy), history and politics...blah blah. But like I said, I'm open to anything. I think I want to get into game theory, so list some good books about that.

Thanks

I second this. This is an excellent book and I'm surprised it's not recommended in OOT more often.

This list will be primarily for my girlfriend's family. They no doubt already think of me of a sleaze, but having her mother buy me a book about penetrating a society of pick-up artists might be a little over the top.

Kerouak, Hunter Thompson, and Tim O'Brien

[/ QUOTE ] If this is the style of book you most enjoy, I recommend strongly the following books:

Post Office and/or Ham on Rye by Bukowski for a novel, or for a short story collection Tales of Ordinary Madness

Naked Lunch by William S. Burroghs

politics

[/ QUOTE ]
Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan
Thucydides: Peloponnesian War (these two you can read for free online, btw)
Kuttner: Everything For Sale
Lindert: Growing Public
Lindblom: The Market System
Stiglitz: Globalization and Its Discontents

I want to get into game theory

[/ QUOTE ]

Game Theory Evolving by Gintis
Behavioral Economics by Camerer

If you read something about traditional game theory you are still behind the curve, because the assumptions behind it are being falsified at a rapid pace, and the Evolutionary version has been more sucessful at predicting outcomes. It still is good to read up on it, at least for historical purposes; perhaps Davis's Game Theory: A nontechnical introduction would be good.

Anything Bukowski published while he was alive.
The Illuminatus! trilogy
Gravity's Rainbow if you're feeling adventurous and want something overly-intellectual
Infinite Jest is the best book I've read in years, but people either love it or hate it.
William S Burroughs' nonfiction is fascinating.
