This is why our court system allows for trial by jury. I.E. a bunch of other folks who may have their houses intruded on by jackbooted cops in the middle of the night.

That didn't help Cory Maye.

I know very little about the case. However, I would speculate that his lawyer [censored] up hard core. He should be replaced for the appeal. I know if I were Cory Maye, I would appeal all the way to Judge Roberts (you know, the guy Bush just appointed to head the SCOTUS).

Even with all the checks and balances in the universe, nothing is perfect, though.

Not anymore it doesn't. Jury trial has been perverted and subverted for decades. Jury trial is little more than a rubber stamp for the state these days, rather than a check upon it, which was the intent.

There are several interesting questions here. Why do police departments always claim to hold their officers to the highest standards -- and then when one steps out of line, they hold them the least accountable?

Why does the shooting of a police officer require the deployment of the entire force, while the shooting of a citizen only requires the deployment of a single officer? This is the equivalent of me sending my entire staff and family to find the missing maid -- as opposed to simply sending the maid to find my missing daughter. Who's working for who?
