Really? Although we were obviously way wrong to consider them such locks, it makes perfect sense to me why. I mean, you had one team full of no stars that didn't score a lot of points that played in the East. And then you had a team from one of the 3 biggest markets with tons of star power with a potential dynasty.

How was that Pistons team any different from the team that lost to SA in the finals the next year?

As a Spurs fan, the Lakers pissed me off mightily that year. They played by far the best basketball of any team all year against the Spurs in the 2nd round, knocked aside the pretender Twolves and then completely imploded against Detroit. Either SA or MIN would have been favorites over DET, but the Lakers squandered it all.
