I have played the original Starcraft and loved it. The problem is that my friend Kevin is completely inept when it comes to button pushing games. I am pretty bad, but in the past I owned him in stuff like that. In turn my brother would own both of us. Strategy games will give us a more even playing field.

Starcraft is probably the pinnacle of RTS. I think you can start without Brood War and still enjoy it a ton.
I asked a friend of mine who'd played Heroes multiplayer, and he still recommended it. Said it takes about 4 hours or so to play due to the slowness of a TBS being played multiplayer.
Man, I wish I could remember the name of the play-by-email game turn based space exploration game we played back in college. It was fantastic; I'd probably play it again now. But I remember so little about it, so there is the possibility that it's only good while drunk.

Ok, got it.

Yeah, the four best fairly recent TBS's (turn-based strategy games) are Civ IV and Advance Wars I, II, and III (I haven't played III). I like Advance Wars, personally, a lot more, just cuz Civ IV can just get too long (one more turn syndrome).

Advance Wars is quicker and a lot of fun, though not as deep strategically, and multiplayer gets pretty unbalanced (I think it gets better in the sequels).

Oh my god! I remember playing this game when I was like 10 and loving it. My brother bought the 3rd one and it turned out to be not as fun. Melee mode was the best.

The original (with expansions) Total Annihilation is my favorite RTS. Might be hard to find 10 years later, of course

Don't Command and Conquer games fit this mold? Or does no one play those anymore?
