why?

[/ QUOTE ]

when he checked the turn I figured he didnt have an Ace and likely had a J or some QTish type hand he decided to try and pop me with on the flop, thought I could maybe get a bluff out of the latter, and a value bet out of the former when I checked the river.

villains plan was to possibly raise hero off the best hand on the flop and ensure that he himself sees showdown cheaply.

However when villain sees that hero checked the river to him instead of the more-than-common kneejerk river oop river bet, villain is like "geez I guees my pair of jacks/dueces is the best hand !". So then the villain gets greedy and bet. After that hero c/r's to let villain know that that [censored] does not fly and 1 bet is still effectively going in per street.

I like the line if the villain would never play an A this way. I think this play confuses the opponent enough to call your river raise with a worse hand, just because he's so confused about the action. There are also almost no hands that you are getting 3 bet with here except monsters, and then it will be an easy fold. Often the villain has rags and thinks he might be able to pick up the pot on the river if you have something like KQ or KT and might fold. Or the villian is making a thin value bet.
