there are plenty of American companies already strongly related to online gaming. Full Tilt/Tiltware is probably the most visible.

Not sure if you meant "private" in some other sense, but Sands is not only public, they're by far the largest public US casino out there.

My take on this is LVS isn't stupid enough to open a site like this if they'd face US scrutiny for it. And either way, I think it's directionally good news for the entire online gaming industry. Whether it implies good news coming down the road - who knows? But this is a great step towards adding some credibility.

I'm not sure why this is being positioned as a move ahead of a change in US position. It looks like a move to take advantage of the UK legislation that comes into force in Sept 07. A US business sees a large (Europe at least) market, with a secure legal and political position so they are launching a 100% legitimate, branded, site.

Expect others to follow.

That makes sense - but LVS also needs to drive brand awareness in Europe - and this is a good first step.

this just has to be good news, or am i still looking at things through rose colored glasses. congress is for sale, we all know it. wasnt there a conspiracy theorist on here a couple months ago that thought they would ban poker, us companies would get in the mix, and poof, they would legalize it with some serious taxation issues?

I meant "private" in the sense of not being related to the government. Same meaning as private road, private school, and private property. The U.S. Postal Service is an example of a public company.

American laws do not define what's legal in other countries, except in American eyes.

Extradition requires double criminality and a company that runs a poker site in Gibraltar or in Malta does not breach any local laws and its directors won't be extradited. The only thing these directors should avoid is travelling to US.

Not really, the MGM was not allowed to offer a play-for-free version in the US, because Nevada Gaming said that was gambling. (Clearly that strict line for non-Nevada licensees has changed in the dotNet era and Harrah's allowed Party to heavily advertise DotNet right on the 2006 WSOP tables.)

MGM closed its Aldernay (?) site because it could not generate enough non-US traffic. Again, this was years ago.

So, you're wrong ... Nevada Gaming did not force the MGM site closure.

Agreed, I've never heard anything about the gaming commission closing the MGM site.
