PLO8 Preflop Pot Raising without AA
I've seen a lot of mentions, and agree with them, about hands to pot raise in PLO8 without AA, so as to mystify the opposition to some degree. Usually it's mentioned in passing. I'm curious as to specific hands and types of hands you personally like to pot raise preflop without AA. Assume a fairly normal table without too many limpers or sticky bettors, and that you're first in.
Here are a few hands that seem like good candidates, and a few that you might suggest are suicidal in these spots: A2QQs to the A, middle position two limpers, SB is best player left to act. A24Kss to the A and K, late position with three limpers. QQKJss on the button with one limper. 2345 first position (does suited matter AT ALL here?) KQ23ss to K and Q on the button with one limper. 78TJ on the button with six limpers (LOL I couldn't resist) Any comments or suggestions are more than welcome. Personally I get the feeling in my somewhat limited (<50K hands) online PLO8 experience that the bigger pairs are generally good candidates when paired with a low possibility, but perhaps not worth quite as much as when you can equally narrow the field in NLO8. I'm especially interested in any hands you have found to be successful here that are nothing like what I've listed. Finally, what % of the value of these non-AA preflop pot raises comes from their AA cloaking value? One could argue 100% and any profits are just gravy. |

Re: PLO8 Preflop Pot Raising without AA
Depends on my estimate of the opposition. Against typical microstakes PLO8 players I'll throw in preflop raises with some A2Ws type hands (in addition to the usual AALx). If opponents seem extra tricky, such that they'll try to bluff-steal a raggedy middle flop following a pfr because they figure I couldn't have connected with it, then I'll add some hands like TJQK to my preflop pot raising range.
I don't like the idea of preflop potraising with 2345 or KQ23. Both of these hands want an ace on the flop, which typically means that if you get a flop you like you will only get action from hands similar to yours. It's deception, but it's not very useful deception. A2QQs seems OK, but in an aggressive game where you might face a reraise I wouldn't risk it. QQKJss, A24Kss - sure, good choices. |

Re: PLO8 Preflop Pot Raising without AA
For me, it's more about position than it is about the actual hand. If I have a decent playable hand in LP, I'll probably raise with it. Also, if I've got a nice stack that I can bully people and control the action, I might raise with a kookie hand like 9-9-10-J and do what I can get to show the hand down cheaply, unless the flop hits me square in the nads.

Re: PLO8 Preflop Pot Raising without AA
It doesn't matter about the hand. Just pick one at random and go with it.
