Default My laptop was dropped one too many times - need data off it though

Dropped my laptop once, cracked the screen, still worked fine.

Dropped it again, screen is unreadable and when I start it with another monitor it boots normally until the Windows XP login screen and then says a DLL file for user names is missing.

Whenever I open the screen (trying to start it in safe mode) the other monitor goes off and I can't see what the hell is going on.

I'm down after 10k hands and I'm really pissed at poker and my computer. [censored]. [censored]. [censored].

Someone tell me how I can get the data, and where I can get another laptop in the next 3 days with good resolution.

Thanks,

Craig

Get something like this, put your HDD in it, and attach it to whatever computer you come up with.

I just got it working with the external monitor...but I think we have bigger problems. Windows won't start normally or in safe mode.

This is the error message:

"The login user interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load."

Is there any hope?

I imagine you have already seen this.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...ty/msgina.mspx

and this

http://www.netadmintools.com/art190.html

Other then that, it's hard to say (that second link is for Win2K but should be pretty similar to XP if thats what you are using.

I would not use a downloaded version, there should be an original version on your copy of windows.

I lost my CD. [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I've pretty much given up on this computer so I'd gamble with the downloaded one. I just don't know what to do with it.

Thanks for the help.

if your going to get a new computer anyway just use a device like blinden84 suggested. You will be able to put it on the new computer and pull your data off the drive. Better yet after you get the new computer and pull you data off the drive you can format it and use it as a backup device. I have one of those enclosures that has a 2.5 in it and I backup my important files to it as well as all my pokertracker databases.

Like I said, I'm a noob. So what exactly do I do to get data off my old comp if I can't get into windows?

Thanks for dealing w/my noobness.

You put your drive in that. You hook a usb cable from that device to your new computer. It shows up as a second drive inside that OS. You can then copy the files to your new computer.
