Re: ESPN announces top 10 all time HRs (ZOMG DRUMROLL!!!1!!!)
seems to me that the Boone homer is just a product of the ESPN spin and reflects their bias towards the ESPN era of sports
I would have to think that Chambliss in 76 ALCS (game 7 walkoff for the first Yankees world series in 12 years), Dent in 78 one-game playoff (also beat the BoSox and led to a world series title), and Leyritz in 96 World Series (tied game in 8th inning trailing Braves by 3 runs in the game and 2 to 1 in series, which Yanks eventually won starting their late 90s run) were more significant homeruns in Yankee history. |

you mean that it put the Yankees into a world series they lost then, it lead to the 3-0 meltdown the next year IIRC how was that homerun so much more significant again? [/ QUOTE ] RedSox needed Jack Morris |

I don't understand how anyone can argue against the Fisk HR being one of the 10 biggest HRs of all time.

Fisk's is more significant because it's farther back in the past, that's all - and the shot of Fisk hitting it was 'the' Redsox highlight until their WS win in 2004. It was the source of an anecdote in Good Will Hunting and we watch Fisk wave the ball fair - yippee. |

This list is much better....not perfect, but much better [/ QUOTE ] Since you linked this I feel like mentioning that these shows are incredibly addictive and the only competent shows of the BDS. |

[ QUOTE ] I'm really grasping at straws here. There have to be more that weren't mentioned yet... - Ruth's "called" shot - Henderson in Game 5 vs Angels in 1986 ALCS [/ QUOTE ] They mentioned ahead of time that Ruth's "called shot" HR wouldn't make the list. [/ QUOTE ] I understand that they want actual video footage of HRs, but Ruth's called shot was more significant than half the HRs on the list and is one of the most famous HRs of all time. |

you mean that it put the Yankees into a world series they lost then, it lead to the 3-0 meltdown the next year IIRC how was that homerun so much more significant again? [/ QUOTE ] Because it ended a series and not just a game. Fisk's home run was more a kin to Derek Jeter's HR in extra innings in 2001 World Series -- A great HR in a great game with an improbable finish but did not lead his team to the series win. The Yankee's did lose the series that year, but they still won the AL with the HR. Boone's HR did not "lead" to the Yankee's meltdown in the following year's ALCS. That is just a silly statement. Another good comparison to the Fisk HR: Endy Chavez's catch in game 7 of last year's NLCS won't go down as one of the "classic" plays of all times because the Mets lost the game (and the series). If they had won the game (and series) you would see it almost daily. Edit: BTW, I am not saying that the Boone HR definitely belongs, just that it belongs a little more than the Fisk HR. |
