Playing suggestions ($500 br)
Hi all,
I'm regularly a cash game player, and I recently made a post wondering about cash / tourney's. Basically I'm half way through HoH II after reading HoH I and I'm a lot more excited about tournaments now. I'm a average 25nl player, successful 10nl player (over half decent / small sample, 30k hands). I'm not planning on dedicating 100% to one or the other, if I want to play cash I will, but I find focusing one one type of playing style easier to learn, and I retain more information easier if I'm not switching from one discipline to another. Anyone, to stop rambling, what type of tourney do you think is the best for trying to grind out and learn, preferably larger scale tourney's. The enticing idea of them is 'The big score' which for me rules out 10/9 man STT's. Is the 4.40/180 on stars a good place to start? Any $1/2/3/5 MTT's I can find and enter? How would you approach this? Is 100 buy ins going to be enough (I know if you're a loosing player nothing never is). How'd you all get started in MTT's? |

Re: Playing suggestions ($500 br)
With a $500 roll I would definitly stick to the $4/180s. Check out shaundeeb's guide for a lot of good advice on these.

Re: Playing suggestions ($500 br)
If your looking for 'The big score', I'd suggest Stars $3R+A tournaments. Huge fields so don't expect to final table it immediately. But if you do, you have a chance to 10x your current bankroll.

I don't think he should be playing the $3r on a $500 bankroll.

I don't think he should be playing the $3r on a $500 bankroll. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, the variance in that tournament (as it would be for any 2000+ runner rebuy) is huge. He could bust a $500 roll in that tournament within a week or so even if he was playing perfect donkament poker. I strongly suggest grinding the $4 180s; and taking the occassional shot at the 19.00 ET $10 20K guaranteed on Stars. If that sounds dull, well, it kinda is. But $500 doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for MTTs I'm afraid. Particularly if you are unwilling to redeposit. |

Re: Playing suggestions ($500 br)
Personally, I'd play SNGs or cash to build a bigger roll, while taking shots at some $10 and (rarely) $20 freezeouts here and there. Playing the $4/180s to get used to MTTs is probably a good idea too.

Re: Playing suggestions ($500 br)
With a $500 roll, you should be playing:
- $4/180's - $1 - $5 FO's - $6.50 / 45's (or the $5/45's if you don't want to play turbos) - occasional shots at $10 FO's - the 7:00pm one is good, and the weekend 12:00 noon deep stacks are good value, if you don't mind committing the entire afternoon to a tourney. - Very occasional shots at the $3r. Keep in mind, however, that you can easily blow $30 - $50 on rebuys if you're not careful... This is why it needs to be an occasional shot. Once you've got a roll of about $1000, add the $12/180's to the mix. They are fast and soft, but the problem with them is that a dry spell will really hurt if you're starting with $500. OT |

Re: Playing suggestions ($500 br)
keep playing cash, take occasional shots at small $5-$20 freezeouts. Thats pretty much how I got started, I was multitabling sng's and playing a few mtt's and finally won a $5 freezeout.
