No, actually they can't. The wildcard is the 4th seed and if the 1st seed wins the division that the wildcard is in, they cannot play each other. Why do you think the Red Sox and Yankees never play in the 1st round? Basically, the best case scenario for the Yankees is for Cleveland to overtake Anaheim or maybe even Boston, they're only 2 games behind Boston. It has to be Boston 1, Cleveland 2, LA 3, Yanks 4, or Cleveland 1, Boston and LA 2 and 3, Yanks 4 for the Yankees to play Cleveland. The Yankees are 6-0 this year vs. Cleveland and 3-6 vs. Anaheim. It's obviously better for them to play Cleveland than a team that has handled them pretty well this year and over the past few years.
