I lived in that dorm 4 years ago, before they had these rules. We played poker in the common areas all the time. I think some stupid [censored] kids lost a few thousand dollars online and the parents naturally thought that UW Housing should be baby-sitting their kids.

In most other states, it wouldn't be the business of the dorm to prohibit you from gambling online. However, Wisconsin has a horrible law which prohibits pretty much all gambling.

You have a few options:
1) As others have stated, you can close your door.

2) You can continue playing with the door open and likely nothing will happen.
Even if the "house fellow" observes you playing poker,
(a) she may not care,
(b) she may not know that there is a rule specifically mentioning online poker
(c) she may tell you to stop but won't go further
(d) She may tell you to stop and try to use some type of sanction (no idea what this would entail but probably would be a "contact card" for violating housing policy.)

Any way you look at it, the consequences aren't that great.

On a related note, if you want to have the policy changed, you could apply through "SHOCK" to be on the Residence Hall Advisory Board. You could also start a Registered Student Organization for student poker players to deal with issues like this (you only need 3 people to start a group). If you pm me, I can tell you how to create a group and receive funding.

Probably more info than you wanted to know.

Angle screen away from the doorway if possible. Maximize itunes or google whenever she/he comes in the room.

My friends in the dorm would always just put all the money in the chips case until the end.

Be smart and you shouldnt have any problems.

I can't believe this thread is so long. If you can't figure out how to gamble on your computer in your own dorm room you have much bigger problems than just that.

wtf at your RA checking rooms. I lived in Ogg last year, and saw an RA on my floor before Quiet hours maybe 5 times, and this never involved "checking rooms". Just close your door, its not going to be hot again in Madison until May. If she checks up on you with your door closed then thats [censored] up.

if you play limit use a blinder that just shows things in BBs if she says anything be like, "can you tell me what a BB is worth?" she'll feel stupid and walk away, but honestly I think the porn idea is best

Really, this is a problem?

Just play as you like, with the door open if you need to. If the RA ever says anything, tell her it's not real money. What's the big deal? If she ever writes you up anyways, just make a formal complaint stating it wasn't real money. She will never be able to prove anything, and you could argue that there is no way she would be able to tell if it was real money or not anyways.
