Re: Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass
[ QUOTE ]
Rite should be spelled R-I-G-H-T. You were also missing a comma and have some other punctuation errors. [/ QUOTE ] The problem you run into when you decide to correct people is often you are only doing it to make yourself feel superior. But if you truly just want to help the person see or think about something in a way they never considered before you could try using a little humor in your explanation. Problem is when this backfires you must be willing to be viewed as a pompous ass by said friend. Plus the most popular people are those who can let others feel superior yet still be viewed as someone with an opinion worth influencing. I hope you feel better soon and so does your friend even Blarg knows you are keen enough to get his meaning so that is a good sign people like you so just keep doing what you are doing. She probably meant antibodies(white blood cells) as in let your immune system win the fight and you will feel better. |

Re: Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass
often times, when someone misspeaks, but I know what they are trying to say, I simply nod and let them continue. The time o correct is when you can do it front of no one else, so they are not losing face in front of their peers. However, you do not need to rush to correct people. In this case, since it sounds like a conversation btwn the two of you, you can correct her, explaining the diffence btwn Antibodies and antibiotics, or nyquil and antibiotics. Whatever the mixup was.

I feel bad [censored] can't post here anymore and I think he loved that as much as I loved avatars so it seemed like the least I could do. It isn't easy either. lol That is scary sad and funny to me. |

I would say, "Antibiotics work on bacteria not viruses" in a normal tone, and pray they have enough self-esteem to handle such a lashing.

Re: Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass
your self-flagellation is admirable.
No one need point out that Stuey is NOT actually beating himself nor that I misspelled flagellation. THANK YOU! |

Re: Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass
if you say ANYTHING in a funny way, even if it is cocky-funny, you'll NEVER sound like a smartass. correct the person, but in a funny way.

"Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass"
Why not do both? It will be easier than just doing one. fwiw, I usually attempt to correct someone w/o sounding like an ass, fail miserably and become known as "that ass". |

Re: Correcting people vs. sounding like an ass
I used to correct way too much, because I'm a know-it-all-smartass. I've learned that people tend to get annoyed at this after a certain point so I've been trying my best to tone it down.
Basically my rule is if they aren't hurting anyone, or don't really need to know the finer points of something to get their point across, then I'll let it slide. But if their mistake can lead to real tangible errors, or might cost them somehow, then I'll try to politely correct. Sometimes it's hard to bite my tongue though, but it's kind of like letting someone win in a game. If I know I could've beaten them then that's good enoug for me, plus they get to feel good about winning. |
