The BB and the SB are clearly the furthest players from the dealer and already at the biggest disadvantage. I suppose you could play with a SB-only arrangement of some kind, with dead-money blinds, or positional ante.

it would make preflop action super clumsy, which I think is a reason to disregard it in its self (ie if everyone folds to you and you are the big blind, it makes sense that the action closes; it would be weird if there was still one more person to act)

In normal 100bb cash games I don't think it would make all that big a difference. In single blind and same-size blind games there's only a minor effect.

In smaller stack games, this could wreak all sorts of havoc though. Plus we'd all have to go study new jam/fold tables and whatnot.

I do think it's kind of awkward. The small blind commits less in blinds, but has worse position compared to the big blinds. That seems reasonable.
