Default Beards

How negatively do employers view beards these days? I have a beard and am thinking about shaving it for an interview next week, but I don't really want to. My beard is sweet. Without it, I look like a 12 year old girl. But...I really want the job, so I might shave it just to be on the safe side and grow it back if it's safe.

Are any of you against beards or facial hair? Ever know of anyone who was against beards? Am I worrying too much about this?

FWIW, my beard doesn't look like this:

It's short and neatly trimmed.

I would shave it. The only way that I wouldn't is if you know for sure that your employer has no problem with facial hair. My old employer had no problem, but to be on the safe side, I shaved my goatee off. I didn't have to do this, but it presents more of a clean appearance. Besides, unless you are a 12 year old girl, it really won't take long at all to grow it back.

Depends on who your audience is. A friend of mine is a fine artist. After growing a beard (which makes him look 10 years older) his business (mostly selling murals to rich old women) has skyrocketed.

I'm a fan of the goatee and the vandyke, but not so much the full beard.

This might sound stupid, but having a beard might set you apart from the rest of the candidates, and could make you more memorable (word?) and/or unique, as long as you're qualified for the job and the interview went reasonably well.

It just might make the difference, unless the job is in food service. If so, shave it all off.

for better or worse, beards make you look older. so if it's a job where you want to look older and more experienced, go beard. if it's a job where you want to look young and fresh, shave it off.
