Default NL5 & NL10 Bankroll guidelines for PokerStars

I'm quite a bit of a bankroll nit, always attempting to follow the 20 buy in rule for my current level. I'm moving up from NL2 to NL5 and noticed that the maximum buy in on stars for NL5 is $10.00. This is the same maximum buy in as NL10 is.

What kind of rules should I try to follow moving between NL5 and NL10 since there is no concrete way following the 20 buy in rule. I'm properly rolled for NL10 with my bankroll, but I don't want to skip a complete level.

Maybe 20k hands of NL10, or should I aim for some overall goal in money (i.e. aiming for 30 buy-ins of NL5/10).

Advice?

When I moved up from the 2's to the 5's at stars, I just bought in for $5 at the 5's rather than the deepstack that's allowed.

Most of the players you find at those tables are going to be buying in for around 2-3 bucks anyways, other than the couple dudes who will be spewing with their 10 dollar stacks.

It's proper to buyin for 5 at those tables.

Well in that case I've been buying in for $5 at the NL2 tables and I'm a little over $200 in bankroll. I still don't want to be skipping any levels on my way up, so what kind of bankroll plan should I implement?

Its not really skipping a level if youve been buying in for 5$ at the 1/2 cent tables. Just play 5/10 cent and you will be fine, i did the exact same thing when i was moving up.

Well, if I were in your position, I'd go straight to 10NL. 5--->10 is really not that big of a difference, skill wise.

Since you don't want to do that, buy in for 10 at the 5's, and grind up to $300.

When you get to $300, you are well-rolled for 10NL, and you should move up.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to follow basementproject's idea there and just grind it up to 300, then move on up to NL10. Playing pretty consistent, solid poker, I shouldn't have much trouble making 100 more and moving up (knocks on wood).

Thanks a bunch.

I did the same thing, buying in for $10 at the 5NL tables. I found it to be an interesting level because of that. I tried to sit at the tables that had more full stacks because your implied odds are huge compared to the other levels and I found I could do a lot more with suited connectors and small pocket pairs. That and people seem to stack off just a little easier than at 10NL.

I would buy in for $10 at 5nl if it were me and lean on the 2-3 buck stacks. I've been running 8bb/100 doing that for 2 weeks now over about 9k hands.

I am basically at the exact same stage that you are. I started playing cash games with $140 @ NL5. I moved up to NL10 with $250 and decided that if I got down to 15 buy-ins at NL10 I would go back down.

I have found that the difference from NL5 to NL10 is not very much. I would advise that you move up to N10 once you reach $250, or give yourself a certain # of hands a NL5 and then move up.
