Bankroll question re: moving up to 50NL

I've played 25nl for over 20K hands at over 6.0 ptbb/100 hands. I'm at $800 in my bankroll. Does it make sense to move up to 50NL now and if my bankroll goes down to $500 then I can move down to 25NL and rebuild?

20K hands is not enough. You can easily be running very hot. Also I would want 1000-1250 before making the move.

I tried moving back up yesterday. Two hands, AK vs AQ with and Ace on the flop and queen on the river. Next hand had some remaining, got AK raised all in and was up against AA. Seems to always happen when I try to move up.

Sure, go ahead and move up now. If you multi table, just play 2 tables of NL50 and the rest at NL25 for a while, then add a table or two once you get comfortable. You can do it!

Go for it! You have the $500 to fall back on which is a good br for the $25 and you're obviously a winner at the $25 so move up and then move down if necessary, rinse and repeat until you run hot at the $50.

What i would do is:
I play 9 tables of 25nl. If i double up at one table of 25nl then i close a random 25nl tables and add a 50nl table, yadda yadda yadda. I loose my buyin at the 50nl tables i close it and go back to the 25nl table.

You can make some crazy progress when you run hot and you have enough money behind you to keep moving up. If you double up at the 50nl then you open up a 100nl.

Key to this though is that you never play with more then your original bankroll at 1 single table (well give or take 50 dollars)So you should lets say you make it to the 200nl well should should have 800 dollars at other tables/in accout + 200 dollars at the 200nl so if you do loose you not really wrecking your progress to that point or only loosing your initial 25 or 50 dollars.

50nl is where you should start following the 20 buyin rule strictly. I have played 60K hands total and had a 15k breakeven stretch and my game play style in that period is identical to my last 10k hands where I am like 8 ptbb/100. Of course none of us can play like 100k hands to establish our true winrate but that is why it is nice to follow the 20 buyin rule. I think u are absolutely ready to move up. I would suggest however a period where u go back and forth between the limits so you can slowly adjust to the new limit while still earning a protion of your hourly rate at the lower limit

Its pretty easy to give yourself a "must have 20+bbs" or whatever rule when it comes to bankroll management. Quite frankly, if you're a winning player, rules like this will cripple you. If you're a losing player, it delays the inevitable.

So you have 800$ and are currently playing 25NL.

How many tables do you play?
How is your table selection?
How confident are you with your game?

If you are playing 3+ tables, are confident with your game, and you are good at table selecting - here is what you do:
Open up a few of your 25$ tables but keep an eye on the 50$ ones. Datamine if possible. When you see a table that you KNOW you can beat, sit. Why not? Set a stop-loss of 2 buyins, and make yourself leave if you notice you are not playing your A game. Absolute worst case scenario you lose 100$ and keep grinding for a while. Best case scenario, you run well, gain confidence, and permanently increase your earn.

Taking shots is great if you're smart about it. FRNLers dont do it enough.
