Can I take Ripken and trade him after 1991?

I think it's Gwynn and that it's not particularly close.

Ripken's defense is HIGHLY overrated. His range was probably a good bit below average for a shortstop. It is unbelievable that someone compared him to Vizquel in this thread.

Ripken by a lot. Gwynn is one of the most overrated hitters of his generation because of the high BA, Ripken's defense was always underrated because he was tall.

Ripken was an average to above average hitter in an era when teams started dogshit at SS.

I'm not sure about either defensively, but here is the following.

Career BA: .338 vs .276: Huge Edge Tony
Career HR: 135 vs 431: Huge Edge Cal
Career OPS: .847 vs .787 Edge Tony
Career OPS+: 132 vs 112 Big Edge Tony
RBI: 1138 vs 1695: Big Edge Cal
SB: 319 vs 36: Huge Edge Tony
Career OBP: .380 vs .340: Big Edge Tony

I don't think Tony was that overrated. His stats are very good for hitters.

Tony was a 5 time GGer, Cal was a 2 time (I guess he had Omar to go against).

Tony's AB/SO #s are also much better than Cals.

This isn't even close at all.

Picking Tony could make you the worst GM... Possibly ever.

Capone is winning this thread as he's the only one who has brought any stats to the table other than "omgzz not close" and "ripken was a great/average/below average fielder IMO".

No it wouldn't since Ripken wasn't even in the draft.

ripken, didn't have range in the traditional sense but he had great positioning depending on the batter and sometimes depending on the pitch... he got to a lot of balls this way even though he wasn't the fleetest of foot out there...

alot of folks like to apply the same thing to jeter except jeter doesn't get to a lot of balls...

a singles hitting corner OF is not very good.. as far as making contact solid contact with a baseball, i have no doubt gwynn's one of the best ever but ripken beats him in all aspects...

VayaConDios won the thread with the first reply.

ripken warp3 career: 170 or so
gwynn: 120 or so

if i asked you who would you pick if you were the GM of an NBA team 10 years ago, tim duncan or tracy mccrady, would you actually provide stats?
