Default possibly standard 1-2 hand @ bellagio

ok, i'm a nl player for the most part, but i've been playing the 100-200 limit game more often lately for a change of pace. i am admittedly not very good at lhe; i don't think i valuebet enough, so i'm trying to work on that. here's the hand:

couple mornings ago at bellagio, i think we're 8-handed. i post in the co for my first hand and get Q8o (no diamond or spade). a player limps in mp, i check my option, blinds come along and we see a flop of 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

sb leads, bb calls, mp calls, i raise, everyone calls.

turn 4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

sb checks, bb checks, mp now strangely bets out. i wasn't sure if i should raise here or just call. i think for about 15 secs and decide to raise, blinds fold, mp calls.

river T [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

mp checks, i bet.

standard? just checking up on this cuz in a nl game and a 4way pot i usually wouldn't put in 2 raises and a river bet with my hand. comments on all streets welcomed.

I LOL'D.

And I probably check behind this river to a lot of players, b/c they're not calling with worse hands often enough for it to be a profitable bet.

Checking the option prelop and then the flop raise is standard. If you raise the turn here(which is a good play IMO) you are trying for a river showdown with this hand (if you don't get 3 bet on the turn), especially with a spade on the river. He could easily have picked up a spade draw and be donking with that. River bet is a thin value bet and probably not +EV against most 1/2 players IMO.

You played it perfectly nice hand. His most likely hands are 8's with worse kickers (suited connectors) or mid pp's smaller than 8s. If he is a tight Vegas nit then he could have 99, TT here unfortunately but you being new to the table, the diamonds missing, and you betting a sort of scary river card should get you looked up light here. And hey, if you lost, its good for the image to show this fearless river bet

Really?

I've just started playing at these limits, and from what I've seen, both those hands raise pre-flop (especially with a cutoff post).

OP,
My initial instinct was to check behind. But I value bet too little anyway.

Why does everyone always want to raise this hand on the flop? Not only will you get more fold equity from hands you want out (2 overs, A4, A5) by calling the flop and raising on the turn, but you'll usually lose less when you're already beat on the flop.

Two reasons:

1. There is no guarantee the turn will get bet, especially when you happen to have the best hand.

2. You can fade a raise on the flop easily because it could just be a flush draw, and you have more equity on the flop against the various hands that beat you.

But if you raise the turn a 3-bet is very uncomfortable.

3. Raising the turn and then betting the river makes it easier for your opponents to make good laydowns against you. If you raise the flop your distribution is much much heavier in draws than if you raise the turn.

And as for the OP I think he played the hand perfectly.
