Default Korean food is tasty (8/b)

20-40 seven card stud eight or better from the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, CA

History: I got there at about 11am right when the game was about to start. I sat down and bought in for about 3 times as much as most of the regulars and the villain in question, Ali, swiveled away from the NL game he was watching next door and asked me "You are playing hi-lo?"

You see, no one in this game is under 45, and I happen to be 21 years old.

Anyway I scooped him in an utterly standard hand about an hour into the session when I made a 6 high straight on 5th and Ali and some other guy who genuinely does run worse than anyone called me down the whole way.

Up until this point he had been losing but just douched me hardcore in this hand...

He raises first in with A in the door. I call with 63(6). On 4th he catches a 9 and c/rs me when I catch an 8.

5th

26(6-8-6) for me

xx(A-9-K) for him and I c/r his ass

we both brick on 6th and he calls. He calls on 7th and after I announce three sixes he flips three aces and says "I thought you had a full house." Cool.

Onto the hand in question.

He limps with a trey and I pump 65(6) one off the BI. So HU to 4th after everyone folds.

65(6-K)
xx(3-9)

I bet and he calls

65(6-K-Q)
xx(3-9-6)

I bet and he calls

65(6-K-Q-J)
xx(3-9-6-5)

Am I betting this for value? What if I am raised? I was genuinely torn what to do here.

I think initially my table image was very solid, but then I got caught playing two marginal hands(both in great spots however) that ended up winning at showdown. So people might be giving me less credit.

And if you know anything about LA you might imagine that someone named Ali, who made the comments above, might not give me(or anyone else for that matter) credit in this spot.

Beef ribs, Kim chi mixed with white rice, and orange slices were worth the $416 though.

When someone raises right out of the door with an Ace, I generally don't like calling with those types of hands 63(6). If he has Aces, you're a dog, and if he has 3 low cards, you're not that much ahead of him, really. And, if someone behind you calls, then you're kind of in limbo because you don't really have a low draw and your high is so-so. Other than that, I play the hand the same including the river. If he had AAA the from the beginning, then he played it like a wuss.

The other hand: 65(6),on 5th street, I could go either way, cehck or bet. Assuming he was playing a low hand/draw, then the 6 probably didn't pair him, and if he leans towards the aggressive side, then I'd probably check 5th to see what he does because I wouldn't want to have to call a raise. And, if he does happen to check it behind you, then that's Ok, too, because if he's on 4 to a low, then he also might have a straight draw against you as well. And, on 6th, I think you have a check/fold not a bet for value. I mean, what can you really beat here, a pair of 5's maybe? The rest of this hand, if you do continue, is all up stream.

Oh, and I know that you said this Ali guy runs worse than anyone you know, but I guarantee this guy has a leak or two in his game that is cauing it to appear as if he is running bad. You just don't run bad on a regular basis because you're "unlucky." Sorry. Anyway, take advantage of him and call it what you will; thing is, the guy is doing something wrong so you might as well try to exploit it.

When I played in this game about a year and a half ago during the LA Poker Classic I felt like a fish out of water. I also played during the day and everyone there knew each other's games inside and out except for one other "outsider" player and myself. The regulars checked every hand down against each other as soon as it got heads-up. This was even when someone had an obvious edge. It usually went maybe limp, complete, call, raise, call, call, etc., 3 players to 4th street. On 4th, bet, fold, (heads-up now) call, then check, check,... to the showdown. No kidding.

A funny game and I didn't like it. I am not saying the regulars whipsawed others out it is just that you got the feeling that if you bet your low into another low they weren't going to be raising the obvious high. BTW, it wasn't going to change even if someone complained to the floor since these folks were the game, at least in the daytime.

I didn't get a chance to eat there since I felt so uncomfortable. Hoewever I left early and I still had enough of my bankroll left over after my session to take my dining business elsewhere, as well as my play.

Generally speaking in HU pots on 5th and 6th I do see players play a bit more passively against each other but I think that is just because they are bad.

I would say 75% of the players play well on 3rd but from 4th onward they make monumental mistakes that are very easily exploitable.

But yes everyone knew everyone elses name but one women who plays there every Saturday in the 1 seat keeps everyone in line.

One hand old dude named Benny completed, LAG asian women raised and it was HU with a likely pair of 10s versus a likely low draw, they looked at each other and checked it down. Shirley did not like this and she made sure everyone knew about it, but in a polite way.

So I do feel incredibly comfortable playing in that game the way it is now.

This is just plain bad. The $15/30/45 stud/8 game at the Trop was like this when I played in it about four years ago. I spoke up and they did stop checking it down.

I should probably know better than to question the judgment of the best stud/8 player in the world, but when an Ace raises, 663 is a fold. This isn't close.

On the hand in question, I think I check fifth. I definitely check and fold sixth.

I would love to hear anyone try to explain this...

In the hand in question what do you think villain has?

What hands do you play? is 235 playable?

On a serious note though it isn't a great play however the up cards were all bananas and when people make such huge mistakes on later streets I am definitly 100% fine making this play every time on 3rd street.

I have no idea how to play 566QK.

I don't play pairs other than Aces when an Ace raises. I think that this is a sound policy. 532 I'll usually play.
