I don't think this is a matter of waiting for a better position, as preflop the play is correct in my opinion.

The play post-flop is where you let someone with a better hand punish you, but a lesser hand fold.

He either has a pair, has hit the board or is willing to donk off chips bluffing the paired flop. Raising only lets you find out he is more interested in winning the pot then you.
