I can understand if someone hasn't read Kerouac, but to genuinely not recognize the name is to be oblivious.

Why do people always equate intelligence with literary savvy?

Oblivious to what? Middle of the road 20th century American literary figures? Go ask all of the "smart" people you know if they are familiar with Don DeLillo, Thomas Pynchon, Cormac McCarthy, Philip Roth, etc etc etc. You'll draw just as many blanks as you would with Kerouac, and they are FAR better writers.

That's not writing, that's typing.

Go ask them if they have seen Psycho, North by Northwest and Vertigo.

There's LOTS of stuff out there that lots of eduated but ignorant Americans aren't the least bit familir with and they simply don't care.

i think its because very few people are well read.
I tend to think the most people in my math classes are genius, because i know very little about math.
Same can be sai for my art teachers, they know loads about art, and thats about it....until i realized that i thought they were geniuses.

I have read more than all but a handful of people i have ever met, and i currently have a c in 1301 algerbra.
My sister reads nancy drew and is like that dude off numbers when it comes to math. Whos smarter ?
obviously me....lit is so much more important ...lol

I've never read any of his stuff, but I have a general idea of who he was.

To be honest, I think of the 10000 Maniacs song 'Hey Jack Kerouac' when I hear his name.
