A straddle can be live, meaning that the action returns to the player that posted the straddle (and he can raise it), or can be 'dead', meaning that's just a raise in the dark. That's frequently the case with re-straddles.

Ok thanks for clearing that up Paul. I just recently started playing alot of $4/$8 after moving from $1/$2 NL and I keep seeing these straddles and the straddler gets to act last. We had one guy who kept straddling and then after everyone called around to him, he'd raise. He did it every single time that I saw him straddle.

Speaking of restraddles...
I was in the tourney, so didn't see exactly everything that was going down in the wild 4/8 game.. apparently they were capping pre flop every hand. Therefore, I guess ppl started taking it further and started straddling and restraddling. The hand in question, someone posted the straddle for 8, then the restraddle (if I have the term correct) for 12. Others at the table were then confused how many raises there were left. Normally the game is a bet and 3 raises (in this house). So, technically, is the cap still 16 preflop with a straddle and/or restraddle? Or do they not count? Thanks Glenn

Live straddle gives you a chance to raise if anyone calls your straddle before your turn to act. If players before you just call the B/B you can not raise.
A dead straddle lets the player change his action if anyone before him CHANGES THE ORIGINAL ACTION from the B/B. NOW, non of this should at any time be confused with a Mississippi straddle.

[/ QUOTE ] False on both counts. In a typical room at a 4/8 game, the under the gun actor pre-flop has the option to straddle before the cards are dealt. If he does so, the action starts on his left and continues as normal, and each player acting in turn can fold, call 8, or raise to 12. If the normal structure in the room is a bet and 3 raises, so that 4 small bets = the cap, the straddle is not counted against the cap so the cap for that round of betting is 20, not 16. Under no circumstance may a dead straddle remove his money from the pot. He simply does not have the last action.
