FTP Cash For Simple MS Paint Help

I am making T-Shirt designs and have the shirt and background done. It is a solid purple. I need WHITE letters on the shirt but whenever I do it with regular text the big white box stays there. I just want white text on top of purple background, what must I do? THANKS!!
