Moving to foreign country for online poker
Alright, I think it's time we started to consider this option more seriously. Online poker is the US is shutting down. It's just too difficult to play here anymore, and I'm guessing Party games are doing fine with fish depositing and withdrawing at will with heavy advertising.
I don't want to go back to school. I've invested a lot into this poker thing, and if it doesn't work out, I can always come back and go. So no comments about giving up poker; that's non-negotiable. Let's just keep the discussion to benefits of moving abroad. What countries are viable options? Do I HAVE to get a job to live there for awhile? (I don't want to get a job) 80k tax exemption for US...what about paying taxes to the foreign country? Which country has decent living costs? Has anyone done this successfully? Trip report? I believe the time has come where it may be worth it to move for online poker. Fish are plentiful in Europe and I can't risk having funds online and getting frozen anymore. I barely snuck through before the Neteller lockdown on p2p xfers. I don't want to be here anymore until the United States legalizes online poker. I think it's appalling that Frist can make the argument that poker tears apart the fabric of the institution of family, but Pittsburgh, PA can approve a slots casino. [censored] that. So let's start talking about alternative short term options in other countries. -nation |

Good luck Nation. If I didn't have a baby on the way I would be all for it.

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
Moving isn't practical for most.
I intend to continue to play, but will do so from the US unless it becomes impossible. If the US fish are not allowed to deposit, you will always be able to find a way, such as an offshore account. |

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
My only point is that it seems as though it would be worth it to play on Party Poker with weaker players, with no worries of being prosecuted for illegal gambling and no worries of funds being transferred.

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
I heard of this little country called "Las Vegas."
You might want to check it out before bailing out of the US for some silly online poker that may or may not be around in the future. Vegas and stupid tourists dumping their money to any decent player will never stop. Oh, and I think cashing out is a little easier too. FYP |

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
Question: given that B&M play is considered so bad, could you make a living just playing live instead of moving to a new country?
Obviously you'd play a lot fewer hands but would that be offset by the worse players and higher limits? |

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
I've lived abroad and loved it.
As for the rules, they can be different from country to country. Check with the US Consulate in the countries you're considering. There are countries out there that don't require you to work. I lived in Prague, CZ for over a year, and all I was required to do was cross the Czech border every 90 days. For me, this often consisted of a very comfortable train ride to the Germany and back (it took half a day), but you could certainly plan short weekend trips every couple of months. Again, check with the Consulate. They're there to help and protect you. They can answer any question you could possibly have. |

Re: Moving to foreign country for online poker
I've travelled/lived all over Europe and the US, too. If I were you I'd choose from.
<ul type="square">[*]1. Sweden + most of them speak English + beautiful country + nice winter activities + tax free poker on most of the major sites (like PP) + The people are outgoing - arrogant cokcsukcers when it comes to treating neighbouring countries - i'd never move there - they don't have Euros (as currency) [*]2. Finland + Almost all speak English + The same legistlation with Sweden + Euros + Peace, winter and all that bs - For most it's a second hand version of Sweden - People are not that outgoing - I live here [*]3. Denmark Go and see. Does not differ from the other Nordic countries that much. Though it's a bit warmer place. [*]4. Norway + The jewel of Northern Europe + Great people - Not part of the EU (weird legistlation) - VERY expensive [*]All the other countries + The climate + The culture - Most of them are anti-american (it's a fashion i quess) - No speak English
I'm sorry I had no energy to write from the other countries. But it's good that you have noticed that it's not the United States of Europe. The countries differ a great deal from eachother and they all have their +s and -s. Hell, I'd move to Dalmatia, Croatia if I could choose freely. AIM me "karpanen2" or PM for more info |
