Default Cold Calling

The book says to very, very rarely cold call. Yet, when we raise before the flop, aren't we asking others to cold call our raise? (small stakes hold em)

When people cc it's ussually a mistake, which is good. Every time someone makes a mistake it's profitable for you.

Read up on the Fundamental Theorem of Poker for more of why this makes sense. There aren't too many hands that you want to coldcall with. Usually it's fold or raise when it's 2 bets to you.

FTOP is a good place to start with most anything. hence the term 'fundamental'.

as for cc'ing a raise, you'll also want to take into account stack sizes for all involved as well as your own stack. i'll routinely cc with small suited connectors or small pocket pairs when the stacks are correct in NL.

as for LHE... it's dang near a standard raise or fold decision unless you're once again cc'ing for a specific reasoning. ie; build a bigger pot, slowplaying, etc.

cc'ing with easily dominated hands are what most others are referring to. don't cc with a KQ when you're up against an AK.
