http://mlsrumors.blogspot.com/2007/0...-consider.html

With the greater interest in investing in Major League Soccer, slightly more ambitious expansion (18 clubs by 2012) and increased international competition fixtures, MLSR has learned that the MLS Board of Govenors will meet later this year to discuss the following:

* Adding a 2nd Designated player per team.

* Increasing the salary cap to between 3.5 and 4.6 million for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

* Changing rules on international players to make any US or Canadian player count as a domestic player

* Changing the rules on Senior and Youth Internationals to allow one more of each per team.

Very interested to see what comes of all this.

[/ QUOTE ] This is the most important development. Better than the 2nd DP spot, which quite frankly is a silly rule(however I understand the intentions behind it).

Because the increased salary cap will lead to a higher quality of play than a 2nd DP?

I think so. I think it will allow the MLS teams to sign the good USL1 players who weren't willing to take a developmental spot for $17,000, which will add much needed depth to the league.

[/ QUOTE ]without question IMO. Instead of spending 1mil on one player, you could use that money to pay 5 more players 200kish more per year. That will definitely be more enticing to people. It would surely raise the level of play as well.

For instance, $1M would allow a team to sign both Michael Bradley and Benny Feilhaber (if they'd move back to America) and still have money left over.

Or, you could likely add an entire 2nd team of the best 11 players from USL-1.

The atmosphere sounds great.

This game has been far more entertaining than Reading-Everton and Newcastle-Villa today.
