Judging by the pics I've seen, it doesn't look like the train was moving. No derailment or pile up or anything. Just a few crushed cars.

I was wondering why the Twins game was still going on, here is an excerpt from Gambling911 from Foxnews:

"Wednesday night's game was continuing out of fear that letting fans out early would hinder rescue efforts."

Thursdays game canceled.

[/ QUOTE ]

ah jeez - 10K twins fans let out early decide to go gawking - that's a good point -

it's easy walking distance from the Metrodome.

Its actually like 25k people and they want to keep them off the roads as long as possible because under normal circumstances Twins games cause a traffic jam in that area.

Does anybody have any profile views of the bridge before the collapse? There are many possible failure mechanisms and a clear picture of the structural system would make it easier to identify them.

Here is a tiny photo I found, 35w is (edit) the one at the top:

You can see the road going underneath the bridge where my wife and I went running last night.

I'm reading that fifty cars went into the drink, so I think I'm going to take the under on this one. I think that 35/50 would be my guess.

They shouldn't be too hard to find. It seems pretty clear to me from the distribution of the wreckage that the south pier failed.
