are you an md? i always get confused to whos who in the eye business.

[/ QUOTE ]

No...I'm an OD. Everybody gets us confused. Think of it this way

Optician = Pharmacist
Optometrist = Family Doctor
Ophthalmologist (MD) = Surgeon

Optician dispenses the glasses/contacts based on the presciption by the optometrist or ophthalmologist but he's not a "DR". An Optometrist is a "DR" but not an MD....kinda like a dentist or chiropractor.

[/ QUOTE ]

are you serious? a pharmacist goes to as much school as an OD and faces similar (or more rigorous) academic challenges in their path to their careers than an OD. They, too, hold the title "Dr." an optician, otoh, went to vocational school, and are similar to dental hygienists.

Family doctors are MD's just as Surgeons are. they just specialized in a different field.

optometrists are doctors, just as pharmacists, dentists, podiatrists and chiropractors are.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes pharmacists have the same number of years of schooling as optometrists they do not hold the title "dr" probably because they do not diagnose or treat diseases. They dispense medication. I equate them to opticians bc opticians also dispense and do not diagnose or treat. However, you are right, pharmacists have more schooling than opticians.

The amount of schooling required for an OD, MD,DDS,DC are all the same. However, to work as a family doctor you require another 2 years (I believe) but you are an MD even without the 2 years.

I am a -11 how much worse can it get before I actually go blind?

Will laser surgery help me or is it too risky?

Is there anything I can do to improve my night vision? I haven't been able to see in the dark my entire life.

Thanks

[/ QUOTE ]

-11.00 is considered severe. You would probably not be a candidate for lasik although it is possible. As long as you can see with your glasses or contacts, you are never considered blind no matter what your prescription is. In reality, there is no difference between being -6.00 or -15.00. Neither person can function without their glasses. The only difference is the -15 has to hold a book 3 inches from his nose to read and the -6.00 has to hold it at maybe 6-7 inches...beyond that, there's no difference so dont worry too much if it gets a little worse.

If you are not a candidate for lasik,you can consider implantible contact lenses.

Are you aware of any successful treatments for congenital nystagmus?

-3.75 is not bad at all.....you should consider lasik when your prescrption does not change for a full year...longer would be even better.[list]

What are the odds of complications arising after going through LASIK or PRK? What's the worst that can happen?

[/ QUOTE ]

I already posted this earlier in your thread but maybe you missed it. I would really like to hear what you have to say about this as I am considering doing this sometime soon.
