Nick D - the bottom part of your post is spot on but you give this guy way too wide of a range. Usually quiet old men at the B&M don't even raise JJ let along 77 or 66. Definitely isn't raising KJ, or QJ/JTs. Probable range IMO is AA-JJ, AK-AJ, maybe KQ. OP may have had a different read though that he didn't post.

I think you're pretty close, Lethe... I had just sat down at this table about ten minutes earlier, and had seen villain limping quite a lot but never raising. My usual take on the geezers is that they will never raise anything but AA-JJ.. any maybe sometimes AKs if they're feeling frisky. Given his passive play in this hand I would never have put him on a set in a million years, so JJ was what I was thinking he had here.

well your hunch is very wrong. I play live a lot. I'm usually very, very good at knowing what I'm up against. They way he played the hand told me that either he had JJ or was the weakest poker player I've seen in six months. When exactly during the hand, as played, would you have sensed that you were beat? Don't say before the flop, that horse is dead now..

The flop. A player of this type raises five hands: AA, KK, QQ, AKo, and AKs. With an AK3 flop, you're in big trouble (which is why I recommended folding the flop).

Anyway, my point wasn't to chide you or anything. It was only to express surprise that, with a lot of live game experience under your belt, you seemed to taken aback when someone WAY underplayed such a strong hand.

Players like this will NEVER bet JJ on this turn.

If true, then I suppose I could have just called the turn and checked behind on the river. That would have made it an even less expensive experiment.

Yes, I know I know.. fold PF. 99.9% of the time I would have. This hand was (thankfully) a rare thing for me. I'd have been tempted to call the $6 if my A3 were suited, but anything below A8o gets mucked PF with a raise out there. Except of course for this hand.
