yeah, pickups are huge outside and small inside, look ugly and need tons of gas.
only reason i can see is if you need to be able to quickly shove your very big stuff on the load area and it doesn't matter if it gets wet. for example a gardener who has to transport big plants in pots.

but there really can't be as many gardeners in the US and A as there are pickups.

i guess we non-americans will never understand this.

Simply because we can. IMO the question is not "why do Americans drive these type of vehicles", but instead "why are they not popular in other countries?".

The answer is available space, and available cash imo. Space meaning that the roads are far wider in the US than just about any other country. Driving a full sized American truck would be a nightmare nearly anywhere in Europe, but here it's virtually never an issue. And cash meaning two things, #1 one of the richest countries in the world per capita, #2 cars and especially trucks and SUVs are far less expensive here, along with the gas to power them. The money difference between a small economy car and a big SUV is simply not a huge deal to a lot of people here. Other fairly rich countries (For example Norway has a higher income per capita than the US) have to pay so much more for vehicles and gas, that their extra income doesn't come close to making up the difference.

The physical and economical differences between the US and most other countries has lead to different preferences. A lot of Americans buy trucks simply because they like them, and they like them because they're available, practical and trucks are marketed to individuals. The average European wouldn't be caught dead in a pickup truck because it'd be terribly impractical on narrow city streets, no one markets trucks to individuals, and it'd be far more expensive to purchase and keep running.

I don't own a truck and never have, but I do understand people who buy them. First they can be very useful, and also to some people in the US (especially the Southwest) it's almost a status symbol comparable to a sports car. Nobody needs to go 0-60 in 4 seconds on public roads, but a lot of people buy sports cars. It's the same idea with a different group of people who's preferences have been shaped by a totally different environment.

i totally agree about the space issue (i live in switzerland, but the situation is about the same in whole central europe).

i'm not so sure about the price reason. i think SUVs are about in the same price-range as these trucks. and SUVs are definitely widespread in europe. if pickups are really more expensive in europe then i would guess it's only because so few of them are sold here (not the other way round).

i think history / image of trucks is very important to people though.
