How to rake with side pots
Lets suggest you are raking 10% max $4. Your main pot has $24 before the flop. A side pot is started immediately after the flop which eventually has another $16 in it. Your lowest denomination chip is $1. What do Casinos tend to take rake and from where in such an instance?

One says exactly what was posted above and one says you make the rake right for the total pot (take $2 from the main pot and then $2 more from the side pot to take $4 on the $40 total pot). I don't know which one is right, but I go with the raking $2 and $1 as gaming is less likely to have a problem with that. Note: under raking is a gaming violation in many jurisdictions, but over raking is a violation in all jurisdictions. Gaming has some regulations in place to protect the casino patron, but also has regulations in place to the casinos from their employees (example the rake should be dropped immediately after the hand rather than held out to color up to a higher denomination chip).

Main Pot $9, Side Pot $2 If we rake based on the total we take $1 rake and $1 jackpot. Can't take it from the main so you take it from the side pot -- now there is no side pot. I know its contrived and some rooms may not allow SB and BB to play with that small a stack, but it does demostrate a problem with the policy espoused by one of your people.

I've always had the opinion that in specific cases (such as taking $1 out of a $2 sidepot), you should deliberately under-rake the pot by one unit.
Be warned, however, that this thinking cost me my last job, when I was seen not taking $1, and management disagreed with the above paragraph.
