2+2 ma'ams:

The UK version of Big Brother started a few weeks back, with a house full of women. If you discovered you were being put into a Big Brother house with 10 other people for months, would you prefer:

1) All women
2) half women, half men
3) All men (except you)
4) something else

and why that choice?

Ask real questions people. Most poker players agree (let's go with 70 / 30) that people are retarded, and that explaining to them that you are a poker player is extremely difficult. It is frustrating, but I can deal with this.

But what should we tell a woman we're interested in when they ask us what we do? Should we lie and say we're in risk management? Or some such BS? Make a joke?

My current lines include:

I finished college last year and I'm just travelling around for a while.

I play poker but I have a degree so I have a backup.

These lines all suck and these women take no interest in me.

Help me ladies!

[ QUOTE ]
i don't think the core of someone's personality can change w/o them undergoing some traumatic or extremely unlikely event (good or bad). obviously nice people can be mean and vice versa, but i think waiting for a mean spirited person to become nice is usually a waste of time.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with the trauma thing. That's why I've found a lot of pampered and protected kids growing up to be really unpleasant people. They've never had hard enough times in life to be forced to identify with anyone else or anything but their fantasies of their own superiority. A few hard knocks can turn someone's personality right around, dramatically for the better. If he makes an effort.

Import/export. It's what all the mobsters say. Nobody knows what it means, and surprisingly, people often don't ask for an explanation. If they do, any bullsh*t will do.

Very tough question. I don't think you should lie (although Blarg's import/export answer is pretty funny). Have you been successful at all?

I like this answer - "I finished college last year and I'm just travelling around for a while."

Then go on to tell the girl that you've been gettin into poker and have been quite successful at it. Then ask if she plays at all and if she has any interest in learning it.

I've said it several times on these forums but I'll repeat myself. Offer to teach a girl poker and you would be surprised how many will look up to you. Yeah some girls have no interest in it. But in this day and age there are many women, young and old, who would love to give it a try and are rather shy about it. You could use your knowledge to your advantage.

A lot of girls are interested in gambling, not only poker but other games too, even horse races. You might offer to take a girl on a date to the races or something. I know I would love something like that myself.

You could say that you are very into poker and card games in general, and you're thinking about a job in a casino. That might sound cool to some girls.

But my main suggestion is to not act apologetic or embarrassed. Tell the girl that poker is a lot of fun, that you just love it and hope to get a job in a casino where you can learn how to be better at it. Tell her that it is becoming a more socially acceptable career.

I say, or said, "I'm a professional poker player." If that bothers them, then congrats, we've filtered her out early.

It's way more in how you say the lines, if you want to call them "lines". Try adding some mystery to it or just not answering the question at all. Those are both better approaches.

According to the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour...

"Daddy's girls" who had close relationships and formed strong emotional bonds with their fathers as children tend to be attracted to men who look like them when they grow up.

Thoughts?

These studies are weird. Who funds this kind of study? I can't think of one girl who's married to a guy who looks like her dad. However this sounds a lot like a similar theory I heard on the Today Show a few years ago. (A theory that I thought was completely pointless but I never forgot.)

The theory was about how beautiful people marry other beautiful people and how plain people marry plain people and it turns out that very many people will choose mates who have similar features to themselves. For instance, a tall thin Scandinavian-looking guy will tend to choose a girl who is tall and thin and has similar features. Or a guy with a big nose will pick a girl with a big nose, that kind of thing. Anyway, ever since I heard them say this I've been noticing it everywhere.

I think this is one of those theories that is working backwards. People choose people like them because they are the people most likely to have them. Different races develop prejudices against other races and preferences for their own. People who are wealthy travel in different social circles than those who are poor or middle class, and all of them tend to hang with and wind up marrying people from their own class, or, in the case of men, at lease a class no higher. There are also social pressures to do so and prohibitions against doing otherwise, and ethnic and religious pressures as well.

The world is hardly a place without tons of things channeling people toward a very specific end when it comes to marrying. You have to look at things like a naif in order to be mystified by it and think that it is all about personal choice.

Hell, I'm dying to marry an eskimo, but there aren't a lot of them in California. I may just have to marry someone who looks more like me. Besides, my mom says seal blubber and igloos are a sign of the devil.
