I'm grunching this. OP did fine. No reason to get your ass kicked or shot or stabbed over something that you have no idea about. It's very possible that you standing there could have prevented a curb kicking. Getting her in a cab and home was very honorable.

I think it may come down to some having the mentality of 'eye for an eye' at all costs while others understand where the social boundaries may lie. It seems pointless to come up with examples that are similar because they will still differ. Bottom line is she is a girl. He is a guy. Guys shouldn't hit girls. Guys should never punch girls. Guys should absolutely never kick the crap out of a girl. If the latter takes one punch, then that one punch should never be thrown. I think anger management may be needed for those that feel differently about this.

I would like to thank everybody who did chime in and said I did a good job in handling the situation. I sincerely appreciate the good sentiments. I was completely shocked when I saw it go down and it made me throw up a little in my mouth afterwards thinking about it. It was uncalled for and completely out of line. Its just something that shouldn't happen. I think the right thing to do as a man (in this spot) is controlling your aggression and knowing when to walk away, get your wits about you, calming yourself down from a heated situation and acting instead of reacting. At least that seems like the more intelligent thing to do IMO.
