Do College Admissions Essays really matter?

My thoughts: the essay isn't super important.

If your academic qualifications are boderline not good enough for a certain school but you write a memorable essay that stands out, it can certainly help you get in. Also, if you write a very poor essay (the only thing I could think of is one that is very inappropriate or one that shows you clearly put very little thought/effort/time into it) it could prevent you from getting accepted somewhere you may have gotten into.

Other than that, if your essay is just "normal/solid", I doubt it has too much effect on whether or not you get in somewhere.

Unacceptable GPA and SAT.

It's hard to blow it with an essay if your GPA and SAT are through the roof. But i suppose you could if you called the admissions lady a cu**.

It would be silly to do that on a board where there are tons of people here who are smarter and more successful than i am.

No ... I rarely post here and so I could care less ... but I know there were some Northwestern guys here ... and I really was looking for their input on the whole thing

actually according to self reported info from NU its does play a slight role.

I forget where i saw this, was worded as something like "demonostrated interest"
