Default LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring (GAME THREAD)

It's the evening of Bilbo Baggins's eleventy-first birthday

and all of the Shire is gathered for the party. Even Bilbo's old friend, the Wizard Gandalf, is there, providing his unique brand of fireworks for the entertainment of the hobbits.

Bilbo's adopted nephew Frodo is of course there as well, with his friend Sam.

After much eating and drinking, the hobbits settle down to listen to Bilbo make a speech.

"My dear Bagginses and Boffins, Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubbs, Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots!"

("Proudfeet!")

"Today is my one hundred and eleventh birthday! Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

"I regret to announce that this is the end. I am going now. I bid you all a very fond farewell. Goodbye."

And with that, Bilbo vanishes.

The crowd is stunned for a minute, though Frodo knows that Bilbo has used his magic ring to turn invisible. Frodo looks around, and notices that Gandalf had apparently disappeared as well.

Frodo sees his friend Sam, plus a number of people who look familiar, but he can't quite place all of them.

Frodo returns to the home he shares with his great-uncle and finds Gandalf waiting for him.

"Bilbo has gone to live with the Elves in Rivendell. He left you this house, and his ring. I must go now and make some investigations. In the meantime, keep the ring hidden, and don't put it on."

Frodo agrees, and Gandalf vanishes into the night to look into the origins of that curious ring.

Gandalf, please submit a peek.

It is NIGHT.

Game starts Thursday morning.

Several years pass.

Finally, one day Gandalf returns to the Shire, and with much agitation asks to see the old ring of Bilbo's. To Frodo's surprise, he tosses it into the roaring fire in the fireplace.

When Frodo removes it from the flames, he can read an inscription on the ring.

One Ring to rule them all
One Ring to find them
One Ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

Gandalf explains that this ring is the One Ring, that most sought after by the Dark Lord Sauron. He has spent the last few years investigating this, and he's learned that the creature Gollum, who was the prior owner of the One Ring, was taken captive by Sauron, and told him that it was taken by a Hobbit named Baggins.

Gandalf quickly enlists Sam to go with Frodo, and the two of them make plans to leave the Shire as soon as possible. The forces of Darkness are already on the move to locate them and recover the One Ring.

Gandalf tells Frodo that he will go to Isengard to consult with the head of his Order, the wizard Saruman, who is an expert on the lore of the One Ring. He will meet up with Frodo and Sam in the town of Bree in several days.

Frodo and Sam begin to make preparations to leave, under assumed names so Sauron's minions will have a hard time locating them, and the Ring.

---

Unless noted otherwise, "the first game night" is when masonries and the wolf team can begin chatting, and when powers kick in. That night is not now, but Thursday night, after the first game day has ended.

It is NIGHT.

Frodo and Sam learn that the Nazgul, Ancient Kings of Men corrupted by the power of the Rings, have located the Shire and are approaching quickly. With the help of their Hobbit friends Merry and Pippin, they leave the Shire under cover, and head for the Inn of the Prancing Pony, in Bree, to meet up with Gandalf and head from there to Rivendell. Secrecy is the most important thing -- the Ring must not be discovered by the Dark Lord.

------

Gandalf: Seer, with Night 0 peek.
Aragorn: Angel. 50% protection on Gandalf, and the Ring-Bearer, otherwise 100%. Cannot protect himself.

Frodo: Masons with Sam. Ring-Bearer.
Sam: Masons with Frodo. If Frodo dies, Sam becomes the Ring-Bearer. If both are dead, the One Ring is lost.

Merry: Masons with Pippin. If Pippin is killed at night, Merry dies as well.
Pippin: Masons with Merry. If Merry is killed at night, Pippin dies as well.

Legolas: Starts game told he's a "villager". Peeks as "Legolas".
Gimli: Starts game told he's a "villager". Peeks as "Gimli".

Boromir: Corruptable villager, does not know his identity, but corrupted if nightkilled. Peeks and dies as "Boromir". A peek will also tell you if he's been corrupted, but death won't.

Ring-Bearer: The Ring-Bearer gets a peek each night, starting with Night 1. If the Bearer is killed at night, that night's peek is wasted. If the One Ring is lost, all village power roles lose their powers, including masonries, but also Boromir is no longer corruptable. Abilities or effects based on plot points, if any, may be retained.

Evil:

Sauron: Peeks each night to locate the One Ring. Detects whether or not the target is a hobbit (Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin).

Saruman: Godfather, peeks as villager, true role revealed upon death.

Witch-King: Role-blocker

Nazgul (3)

9 Fellows, 11 vanillagers, 6 evils.

Notes:

Nobody is killed automatically by any plot event. Other things WILL happen via plot events.
Masonries are night-chat only.
No quoting PMs. No using weird html to send secret messages inside posts. Generally, no angle-shooting.

Nightfall is 10pm. 9:59 counts, 10:00 doesn't.

--------

It is DAY 1.
