[/ QUOTE ] Good Lord, did you not take any algebra in school? There are multiple variables in the excercise equation, you can manipulate time or effort and keep calories burned equal. So you can work harder or longer to get the same caloric deficit. And what does it matter to you if someone else burns more or less than you do? Chances are you could train for years and not be as fit as the 4th string kicker on a single A college team. Stop worrying about other people so much you'll be happier and you'll stop bugging me with your whinging. |

Running hard for 20 min would probably be less efficient compared to walking off the same calories. This is assuming your goal is to lose fat while preserving muscle.

I've thought about this for a while.
My intuitive conclusion was that it would take more energy to travel the same amount of distance FASTER, but this may be totally off base --> no independent research. |

Corroborative evidence
FWIW,
When I do my cardio i wear a heart monitor which, among other things, estimates the number of calories burned during the session. It takes into account weight, avg heart rate, and time. When I jog, I run an approx 3.5mi loop. Sometimes when it's hot or I'm hungover, I wind up jogging half and walking half. Sometimes I jog three min, walk three min, and repeat. At any rate (no pun intended), my total calories expended seem to be very similar whether I jog the whole distance or do some combination of walking and jogging. |

I think the relevant idea is here: Physicists have specific definitions for “energy” and “power” even though these words are often used interchangeably in common speech. Energy is the ability to do work, while power is the rate at which work is done. The time it takes speaks to "power", but the energy (calories) is the same. |

It's the same total amount of work whether you walk or run, so the calories burned should be about the same.
You will get more cardio benefit from running though, which helps you more long-term. |

[/ QUOTE ] Your heart rate doesn't drop the second you stop jogging. If you are tired or it is hot out your recovery time is going to be slowed down and if you are really tired or overtrained it may not come down at all while you are moving. Those HRM are better off showing how much effort you expanded for a similar workout over time than in a strick count of calories. IE 2 months ago your normal route burned x calories, now it only burns x-y calories. |
