Healthy eaters: Share your shopping lists
And also how often you go shopping. I've gotten into the habit of buying a lot of fruits and some veggies, but I really need to branch out, and I could use some ideas. If you want to include some general recipes, that's cool too.
Yesterday I went shopping and bought: Zuchinni Squash Onions Mushrooms Bell Peppers (for a sort of cajun slurry with chili powder and worchester) Oranges Bananas 5 pound pork shoulder 1 chicken 4 Spicy italian pork sausages (all for the smoker) Onion bagels Cream cheese 2 Digiorno's Bonus points for including approximate expenses per week. |

Once a week, sometimes 2x week, either TJs or whole foods
banannas - eat these daily apples - eat these daily eggs - eat these daily cottage cheese - probably every other day almond butter broccoli broccolini spinach tomato avocado carrots corn peas stringbeans mushrooms peppers Most of this is in a frozen medley, I buy fresh each time I go to the store but only for one serving/meal/cooking, otherwise it goes bad or I don't eat it in time etc... chicken 2x day beef 1x day fish 2/week larabars jerky almonds/walnuts That's about all that is in my kitchen. I eat out 1-2x week, mostly sushi. Approx. expenses are around $100/week. |

Re: Healthy eaters: Share your shopping lists
I go to a farmer's market on Thur or Sat for produce and occasionally fish. I'm not a health food guy, but the only place I can find steel cut oats (except for the overpriced McCann's) is at a health food store,-- so I go there to check out the pale and grumpy people once a month. There are two regional chains I may go to every other week or so for milk and eggs, tea, occasional a canned good or three, if I'm jonesing for a banana or a mango or an avocado or something else you can't get at a farmer's market, and one of the stores has a huge fish market, so I take a peek there.
For meats and poultry, I do get a bit health nutty, I tend to buy in bulk. The "Eat Wild" site is a good resource to find local producers of grass fed beef and that ilk: http://www.eatwild.com/products/multistate.html And maybe I accidentally get a little eco-friendly by checking out my fish selections here: http://oceansalive.org/eat.cfm?subnav=bestandworst I'd be disappointed to learn that site isn't authoritative because in my ignorance I treat it as such. |

Re: Healthy eaters: Share your shopping lists
Here is the basic list. I switch it around often for sales though. Anyone have a Costco/warehouse club membership? How much can you save on this type of food? The funny looks I got buying ~100 oz. of Turkey (2 for 1) made me think I should be shopping there.
Oatmeal All Bran Cereal Fish - Kroger, Frozen Turkey - Sliced, Sausage, and sometimes hot dogs Chicken - Breasts and Thighs Beef - Occasional lean steak Beef Jerky Eggs Fat Free American Cheese Fruit - Apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries Veggies - Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumber, carrots, jalapeņos, green pepper Spinach/Bagged Salad Low fat/ Low carb dressing - Newman's Sesame Ginger or Hidden Valley Ranch FF Smart Balance Peanut Butter, Chunky Smart Balance Butter, Light Healthnut Bread Campbell's or Progresso Soup Skim Milk Low Carb Yogurt - Kroger Brand 6 pk. Pure Protein Bars Whey - ON Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fish Oil Capsules Centrum Multi 12 pk. Labatt |

I am always shopping for cottage cheese, it's really ridiculous, probably a container per day.

how do you cook those sweet potatoes? [/ QUOTE ] I hate the microwave, I wont even reheat food in one. Sweet Potatoes cook perfect in them though. Its quick and comes out soft all the way through. I usually get the smaller spuds and cook them 5 minutes on power level 5 and then 3-5 minutes on high. I would repeat the process for larger potatoes. I think they have great flavor so I just eat them plain out of the microwave. |

Re: Healthy eaters: Share your shopping lists
Sweet potatoes are versatile. Epicurious.com surely has many recipes for them. They're out of season right now, so I don't eat them, but I like to bake them and then add pepper+paprika+salt. If I wasn't dieting, I'd add a tsp or so of olive oil or butter.
