***Official PGA Championship Thread***
In 1999 I was at my mother and stepfather's place in Iowa. For whatever reason I was crashed out when my mother woke me up. Sergio Garcia is making a run, she said. WTF, who the hell is Sergio Garcia?
This was the major that Tiger had to grind over. For whatever reason, the fans openly turned against him in favor of the young Spaniard. His exhaustion upon making the kick-in for the win was something not seen since. Seven years later we return to Medinah. Hopefully it will be as dramatic this time around. |

"This was the major that Tiger had to grind over."
Bob May says, "hey." Be interesting to see what happens with Ryder Cuppers. 'Bout time Sergio starts taking a beating for not winning a major. I followed him a bit when WGC was here -- he knocks it stiff all day and putts poorly -- hate to use the 'y' word on such a young man, but I think he's got the yips. |

Re: ***Official PGA Championship Thread***
I get kind of annoyed with the double standard regarding Garcia. The media seems so eager to call out a Hefty or Tiger slump or failure, but somehow Serge gets a bye. Not that I wish negative coverage on anyone (less negative coverage on the other two would be preferred). However, he has really fallen apart repeatedly when it mattered most. Doesn't know how to win in the spotlight and youth is no longer an alibi.
P.S. Completely irrelevant, but I was a caddy at Medinah as a kid. |

[/ QUOTE ] Maybe he just doesn't putt well because he isn't a great putter. Seemed like he y'd worse on the waggles a few years ago. Maybe it is the y word. But I don't get how if you are a mediocre ball striker and a hell of a putter you get credit for being scrappy or a scrambler or a great putter. If you are a good ball striker and not a good putter, you get the y word or the choker label. Some people go so far as to say putting should be eliminated or whatevr. I think this kind of cheapens putting skill in that people just assume you should be able to putt if you can hit it. Golf has always been a blend of skills and players had strengths and weaknesses. For a long time people asked what would happen if a guy put it all together, size, strength, power, accuracy, short game, putting, mental game. We have that in Tiger. Sergio is lacking some in his mental game to be sure given some of the whining he does. So maybe he y's. Maybe he is just an incomplete player tho. |

Kind of makes sense to me that if you are a hell of a putter you get credit for being a great putter -- and your save/scramble stats are likely to show it. "Some people go so far as to say putting should be eliminated or whatevr." I've never heard that, actually. |

Re: ***Official PGA Championship Thread***
Euro - sorry mang.
[ QUOTE ] "This was the major that Tiger had to grind over." Bob May says, "hey." [/ QUOTE ] Heh, that was the major I had in mind when I made the thread. The 2000 PGA doesn't quite fit the criteria b/c once Bob May surrendered the lead on the back nine, Tiger was done playing catch-up. Only May's bizarre double-breaker on 18 kept him around...and of course at least one REALLY lucky Tiger bounce down the stretch, most notably in the playoff on 18. It can easily be argued that Bob May put up the stiffest resistance to any of Tiger's majors, but it all engraves the same... |

"and of course at least one REALLY lucky Tiger bounce down the stretch"
People have scanned the video tape for years trying to locate the second gun man behind the grassy knolll who kept the ball on the course. |
