1a. I disagree on GH2 and Guitar skills being mutally exclusive. I had a friend over who plays guitar, who had never played the game, and in under 90 minutes he was 4 starring mediums.

[/ QUOTE ]
Lol this is awful. Anyone who plays guitar should be destroying this game after 90 minutes. I was 5 starring hards easily after this point.

Well, to be fair, he wasn't exactly pushing himself either, but I do have a hard time believing you.

Why is that so hard to believe? The rhythm comes pretty easy if you play guitar prior to playing the game. Picking up reading the notes on screen also came pretty easy, although I have seen a lot of people have trouble with this. All the finger combinations were easy to pull off since I've done chords using all sorts of fingerings on a real guitar before. After ~3 hours of playing I was maybe halfway through hard with 5 stars on most. I'm not saying I was 5-starring Free Bird (I think I did the 2nd time through though) or Hangar 18 at this point, especially since I wasn't even there, but the beginning few sets are woefully easy.

and also opinions, etc on fender vs gibson

If your ear cannot yet differentiate between the sound of a solid state amp vs. a tube amp, and you want a bunch of different effects, a solid state amp to consider is the Line6 Spider III 120 Modeling Combo Amplifier for about $400.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree. I have the spider II 30 watt amp and it's amazing for it's size and rock sound. Get this amp if you like heavy rock / rock. Got it for around 350$cnd a year ago.

I would recommend that you get some descent gear. If you buy [censored] guitar/amps you will sound [censored]. Spend maybe 400 on a guitar and 300 on a amp minimum (thats new). You could get more for your money if you buy used of course.
But it's a important factor in staying with it for the long run, trust me.

why not distinguish yourself by learning an instrument that less people know how to play? Like piano.

[/ QUOTE ]

Enormously awesome instrument, but takes a ton of space. Maybe electronic keyboards ftw?

Has anyone addressed starting out with acoustic vs. electric? I started out with a steel-string (which tore up my fingers badly, unless you want to take the time needed for your fingers to callus over I wouldn't recommend getting one), then played a classical guitar for a month or two before getting an electric. When I finally did, I found it extremely easy to play and most teachers I've asked said starting with acoustic is generally the way to go.

FWIW I have a Martin acoustic now, and I love it. As for Gibson vs Fender, just go play both. Although I do tend to think Gibson's look a hell of a lot cooler.

I've found this site to be very helpful. It was recommended in one of the other threads on guitar in the last couple of months.

http://www.justinguitar.com/html/beginners.html

It gives a lot of free lessons on youtube and has great advice for setting up a practice routine.

The number of people I've met who play piano is dwarfed by the number who think they play guitar.
