Ask all the details about the game up front, if at any time you're not totally comfortable with the structure, leave. No questions just go.

No offense intended but I think you went into this from a bit of a sheltered environment. Welcome to the real world of underground poker.

Now, I'm not implying that what you saw was to be expected, as it sounds like things were being done that were a little shady. Now that you've had the experience you can be more aware and know what to look for in the future. You can ask the right questions about whats going on (like rake structure) and if you don't like the answers or feel uncomfortable with the setting you know to get out asap.

Good luck...and watch your back should you make a big score one night...

Do your warning bells not go off when only one person comes out ahead on the night because of the massive rake?

Agree, as mentioned the only games i'd played were online, in casinos, and home games that weren't raked.

And no I don't think the insurance was a hustle since I understood what was going on with that I was moreso referring to the raking that I had a hard time keeping track of because everything i'd glance away it seemed that was when the rake was being taken.

But yeah this obviously won't be happening again now that i'm aware of it.

"Insurance" and $6 or variable rakes? Sounds like the term "Home Game" should be used loosely. Been to a few of those, very low risk by the guys running it as they were cops and 1/3 of the players in the room were form the "brotherhood". Best advice- stay away from that game or don't look away from the dealer.

This isn't really as low risk as you may think. While in many places it may reduce the risk of a raid, if something does happen these people often stand to loose a lot more than if they were not police.

And just why is this? If someone goes to the effort of organizing a game, and let's say they provide food and drinks, should they not be able to take a rake simply because they're not in some sort of store? If anything, you should be glad you're playing at a house instead. Also, what if there's a payout screwup (shouldn't happen but it does occasionally).. should the guy running the game just take the hit? This is another reason for rake. I would never run any game 1/2 NL or higher at my house and not take a rake. I would, of course, provide free food, alcohol and a dealer, though.

A home game should not be a profit driven operation (other than your trying to profit from winning).

If instead of playing poker your friends were coming over to see a DVD of a movie would you charge them for profit making prices for popcorn and soda and a ticket? of course not.

That doesn't mean you can't ask them to chip in for the expenses. But unless your rake ends as soon as you make your cost for alcohol and food then its like charging the7 for a bucket of popcorn.

And as far as making money to pay for payout screwups, well that sort of assumes you often have screwups and they are always to the negative for the bank. If this is the case maybe its time for a new banker.

Who said the people coming to my "home game" were my "friends"?

If I make the effort to run a poker game and advertise it, I want to make money. I'm not going to run it for fun unless everyone there is a close friend, which isn't the case at all.

I just don't see why people always think it's ok for "clubs" with a storefront to charge rake but not individuals running a game out of a house.
